The Benefits of Regular Tire Maintenance

Tires provide the traction your wheels need to accelerate in traffic, brake, and make sharp turns. Regularly maintaining your tires can extend their life span and avoid running into problems. Paying a little now can reduce the frequency with which you need to purchase replacements, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars in the future.

Reiselman Nissan's express service offers quick, convenient tire balancing and rotation. It's a good idea to balance and rotate your tires approximately every 7,000 miles to prevent excess wear. This is an ideal time to change your vehicle's oil and check the brake pads, air filter, transmission fluid, and other parts. This helps avoid the need for costly repairs—not just those involving your tires.

Rotating your tires can improve handling and give you and your passengers a smoother, quieter ride. You should also check your tire pressure, tread depth, balance, and alignment often. Most tires last about 60,000 to 70,000 miles, and replacing older ones can help keep your vehicle's performance high. Tires in poor condition could jeopardize your safety, increasing the likelihood of slipping on snow, wet roads, or ice. If your wheels need alignment, your steering wheel could tend to turn to one side, increasing the risk of an accident.

Signs You Need To Repair or Replace Your Tires

If you notice one of these signs of tire problems, contact or visit us as soon as possible. Otherwise, the problem could become more dangerous and costly.

Cracking

Rubber can lose its elasticity over time, and you may see fine cracks in the sidewalls of older tires. People sometimes call them “weather cracks” because excessive sun exposure can also cause them. No matter how well you care for your tires, they'll eventually get cracks. If you see a lot of them, it's probably time for new tires.

Squealing

Squealing or squeaking when braking or turning could be from worn tread or underinflated tires that don’t provide as much traction as usual. You could also have brake trouble or loose wheel covers or lugs that increase friction between the tire and wheel.

Vibrations

If the steering wheel or your entire car vibrates when driving at high speeds, you could need alignment or balancing. You may also have a bulge or blister on a tire sidewall. This can be due to a manufacturing defect or a tear that occurs when the wheel rim pinches the tire against a pothole or another obstruction.

This problem isn't repairable and could eventually lead to a hazardous blowout. It's a good idea to replace any tires with bulging or blistering as soon as possible. Other possible causes of vibrations include worn shocks or struts, a bent wheel rim, or issues with your braking or steering systems.

Uneven Tread Wear

Tires that are worn in different places can point to different problems. If you see more wear near the center of your tires than the sides, they could be overinflated. Overinflated tires can increase stopping distances and make your ride harsher while shortening tread life and increasing the likelihood of sustaining damage from potholes.

More wear near the edges of the tires, often called “shoulder wear,” is a common sign of poor alignment or underinflation. Underinflation reduces tread life and fuel efficiency and can eventually lead to tire failure. Poor alignment can cause the wheels to turn inward (negative camber) or outward (positive camber). It can lead to wear on just one edge.

Tires with feathering have treads that look rounded on one side but have sharp edges on the other. Incorrect alignment, frequent high-speed turns, or suspension problems can cause feathering. Feathering on the fronts and backs of your treads rather than the sides is known as “heel-toe wear” and is a common sign your tires need rotating. Tires that look feathered on the inner side are toe-out, and tires with more feathering on the outer side are toe-in.

When tires have angled wear patterns that keep repeating, they could need rear alignment. This often occurs in vehicles with front-wheel drive, and rotating your tires frequently can help prevent it. If your tires need balancing, you could see similar spots or patches of wear that don't look angled.

You can schedule an appointment to get your tires checked at Reiselman Nissan. We're open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
