The Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra are two pickups that you may consider if you’re in the market for a full-sized truck. Both have much to offer, including potent engines, strong towing capacities, and plenty of infotainment tech. But which one comes out on top in a head-to-head comparison? Our team of truck experts here at Reiselman Nissan has the answer.

Titan vs. Tundra Engine and MPG

The Nissan Titan boasts a more powerful base engine than the Tundra, thanks to a big V-8 that churns out an impressive 400 horsepower. In the Tundra, the standard engine is a twin-turbocharged V-6 that puts out between 348 and 389 horsepower. The Tundra has a second option that combines the V-6 with an electric motor to achieve 430 horsepower. However, you’ll need to move up through several trims to gain access to this powertrain.

Both trucks have standard rear-wheel drive and offer four-wheel drive as an optional upgrade. The Tundra has a slight edge in fuel economy in its base setup due to its smaller engine, achieving 24 mpg on the highway compared with the Titan’s 21 mpg. On city roads, the Tundra manages 18 mpg compared with the Titan’s 16 mpg.

Nissan Titan vs. Tundra Towing and Off-Roading

These two trucks are well-matched when it comes to their off-roading capabilities. The Titan Pro-4X and Tundra TRD Pro are equipped with standard four-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, shock absorbers, skid plates, locking rear differentials, and hill descent control. The one advantage that the Nissan Titan has over the Tundra in this area is cost. While the Pro-4X has an MSRP of $50,900, the TRD Pro’s MSRP is around $68,000, primarily due to more upscale features in the cabin.

Both vehicles have something to boast about concerning their towing capacities. The Titan has a higher towing capacity in its base trim than the base Tundra, with the Nissan able to tow 9,040 pounds and the Toyota 8,300 pounds. However, the Tundra’s maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds bests the Titan’s 11,060 pounds. The Titan can cope with a significantly higher payload in its cargo bed of 2,430 pounds compared with the Tundra’s 1,940 pounds.

Tundra vs. Titan Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Titan and Tundra have two similar cargo bed options. The Titan’s two beds measure 6 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 7 inches long, respectively, which is slightly longer than the Tundra’s 6-foot-6-inch and 5-foot-6-inch beds. The Tundra has a third, longer bed option that measures 8 feet 1 inch in length. However, this bed is only really available as part of a work truck setup with a single row of seats in the cab.

There are three cab styles in the Tundra and two in the Titan for you to choose from. The Tundra offers the Regular, Double, and CrewMax cabs, while the Titan has the King and Crew cabs. The Tundra’s Regular cab has a single row with three seats.

All other cab configurations in both trucks have a maximum seating capacity of six, but the Tundra’s CrewMax and Titan’s Crew cabs offer much more rear-seat legroom than the Double and King cabs. They also have full-sized rear-row doors, whereas the smaller cabs have half-sized rear-row doors with rear hinges.

Nissan vs. Toyota Infotainment and Safety Tech

The Titan and Tundra have similar infotainment systems in their base setups, with both featuring an 8-inch touch screen and a six-speaker stereo. Other features in both vehicles include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and BlueTooth. If you want to upgrade your entertainment equipment, the Titan offers a 9-inch screen, a 12-speaker sound system, a navigation system, and voice recognition. The Tundra features a 14-inch screen, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker stereo.

A wide range of safety features is also available in both pickups, including forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning. The Titan and Tundra also have a rear-seat alert that reminds you to check the back row for kids or pets before you exit the vehicle. The titan has a driver attention monitor, while the Tundra has traffic sign recognition. As an optional upgrade, both trucks have a surround-view parking camera to make it easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

Titan vs. Tundra Pricing and Trims

The Titan is available in four trims, while the Tundra comes in seven. The starting price is roughly the same for both cars, with the Titan having an MSRP of around $38,000 compared with the Tundra’s $36,965.

The base Titan S includes cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats. Stepping up to the SV trim gets you a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote start, and proximity keyless entry. The Pro-4X includes several key off-roading features, while the top Platinum Reserve trim adds genuine leather upholstery, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and the 12-speaker stereo.

The first step up in the Tundra is the SR5 trim, which boosts the engine’s output from 348 horsepower in the base trim to 389 horsepower. The Limited trim aims to create a comfortable cabin with synthetic leather seats, automatic climate control, and front seats with heating and cooling. The Platinum edition takes things to the next level with genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The top trim is the Capstone, which adds 22-inch wheels and a head-up display.

As you can see, both trucks offer a long list of impressive features. We think the Titan has the edge with its more powerful base engine, better standard towing capacity, and more affordable off-roading trim.
